Speech and Debate Club Photo Story

Day 3 of selling mistletoe starts on Friday as Speech and Debate Club President, Michaela Martin, and fellow club member, Ceph Poklemba, get the ball rolling.
Ceph Poklemba helps Michaela Martin set up the stand for mistletoe.  Ceph uses his extensive art skills to set up the stand to appeal to more potential customers.
Michaela Martin makes her first sale of the day.  Fellow students and friends pay $2 for their mistletoe, and help out the LBCC Speech and Debate Club.
LBCC student Hunter Burge purchases a $5 prestige mistletoe for his lovely girlfriend Olivia - not pictured.  Hunter pays for his purchase with quarters given to him as tips at his job.  Ceph struggles to count the extensive amount of quarters.
Speech and Debate Club president Michaela Martin, as well as her biology partner, pack up the remaining mistletoe to sell a different day.  The club sold over $90.00 worth of mistletoe and educated many about the new club and their goals; overall a big success!

Week 8 Forum

Topic 1:
1:  I believe that the biggest change in photography was the introduction of color photography.  Though granted there are many big advancements, being able to shoot in color opens up so much opportunities!  A picture may be good in black and white, but something about color can really change a picture for the better.
2:  I really liked Robert Capa because though his pictures weren't too great quality, the content is amazing.  His D-Day shots literally blow out of the water!  Robert Capa changed war shots and - in my opinion - defined the role of a photographer to really go beyond the call of duty.

Topic 2:
1:  I shot my photostory a few days ago, but I honestly think it was a fail.  My story was about a Sweet Home High School student, Jacquline Ohmer, who struggles since she is both Choir president, and Percussion section leader.  The story shows her running from choir practice to band practice and performances while they have a concert on the same day and venue.
2:  Overview of the band and choir.  Mediums would be of the band and choir directors speaking to the group.  Close shots of her playing several percussion instruments and singing.

Sports Skate Shoot: Week 8

Sweet Home skateboarder Jordan Thein performs a stall on the cold evening of Tuesday the 18th.  Behind him is his friend and fellow skater, Christian Cliffton, gaining speed to ollie the funbox.

Sweet Home High School freshman Christian Cliffton goes to the Sweet Home Skate Park just as he does every single day, and hits the 360 shuv-it  with a 180 spin on the mini halfpipe on Tuesday the 18th.

Christian Cliffton ollies off the kicker with massive air as his friend, Bryce Martinez, runs past him to jump off the manny pad and land on his board to catch speed.  Cliffton spends every day at the Sweet Home Skate Park to improve the air on his ollies, just as he does on Tuesday the 18th.

Week 7 Forum

Topic 1:
1:  For my sports shot I would really like to get some shots of my local skate punks.  If no kids show up, then maybe I can shoot weightlifting at my local gym.
2:  I hope to shoot my photos this Sunday, seeing as the forecast will be sunny.  All these skate punks meet up at the Sweet Home Skate Park, so I plan on chilling there for a day or two and get some good shots of whoever stops by.
3:  I'd want my overall to be a picture of all the kids hanging out and smoking in the small bleacher section.  My medium shot would probably be two kids talking, playing with their boards.  I would love to get a close up shot of someone doing a kickflip, or doing grinding a rail.
4:  I have no primary contact, since kids just show up, but I know a few regulars.  Devin Rogers and Shawn Larsen would be good contacts.

Week 7: Free Shoot

Citizens of Lebanon get up early on Friday November 14 to attend Lebanon Campus LBCC or to take the Linn Shuttle.  During their wait, the LBCC Campus trees sit idly and beautifully.
A lone shovel waits early on the morning of Thursday the 13th, in the wet cold gravel for its user to appear.
LBCC student, Katelynn Monroe, finds shelter from the cold wind in the Albany Campus.  Little does she know, right behind her is a beautiful sun rise.

Week 6 Forum

Topic 1:
1:  http://www.karlmaasdam.com/wedding-3/ijus2vde18zbm2e5thetpant94utad
I love this picture because it is a great representation of the Hindu culture.  The family of Dimple - the bride - is huge and so accepting of Brian - the groom - and his understanding of what he is doing.  I believe in this picture she is piercing above his bridge for his Hindu dot.  The amount of emotion in all of them is captured perfectly.
2:  Karl, what is your least favorite thing to take pictures of?  How did you rise up in your career, what started you off?  What is the best thing to do after a terrible photoshoot?  How do you cope?

Topic 2:
1:  My biggest issue shooting this assignment is that in the middle of my photo shoot my camera died on Wednesday.  It killed me since only ten minutes after my camera died the light on the horizon was gorgeous!
2:  My picture of the docks is my favorite.  I planned to take pictures of the second bridge initially, but when I was passing by I chose to go to the docks since the lighting was good there, and I wanted to get a far shot of the first bridge.  Once I got to the docks the water was so low that I knew I had to shoot it.  I love the depth of field in this shot by far.
3:  If I could redo this I would take more time with my now fully charged battery!  I would make sure to get as many shots as possible and spend much more time around the area.

Week 6 Environment, Landmark, and News Photos

Foster Lake's tides reach an all time low this Wednesday the 5th.  Boats are completely unable to launch without any water to drop into as shown.

The class of 2014 keeps up the tradition of spray painting the Foster rock this Wednesday the 5th.  Along with the students of 2014 claiming there spot on the rock are those who have had their lives taken by the lake or themselves.

Week 5 Forum

Topic 1:
1:  What caught my eye was the action shot of Maricella boxing.  What really makes this interesting to me is the fact that she is a female boxer, and most of her shots show more of her gentle side than her boxing side.
2:  The photographer faced the challenge of trying to go out of the norm of sports photos, and growing to appreciate this woman and have such high hopes for her and watch her lose the match.
3:  The theme of this photo story is a regular person can do great things.  Visual consistency is the black and white, she always wears basic light clothing, and her face always has emotion.  The narrative is this girl was working hard to win this boxing bout, but in the end lost.
4:  I could use the development of what is happening to create a story.  I may play with light and darkness to alter moods in sections, such as when Maricella lost it was a much darker shot than the rest.

Topic 2:
1:  Sweet Home High School Band, the band performing in line for State, Several games over the course of Fall, Home games!
A group of students, shooting guns, next week possibly, out in Foster.
2:  I have a good in with the band, since I help them out with every game and transport the percussion equipment.  I would shoot them during practice, during the game, after practice they go to A&W, and repeat the process if they win.  With the students going shooting I would take pictures of them packing guns, buying some food on the way up further in the woods, shooting their guns, the inevitable rain, and the dark drive back.

Week 4 Forum

Topic 1:  The most compelling item to me is the fourth one, to keep consideration of rough topics and events that may cause grief.  Though I may not think about it, I totally agree Journalists should look out for one another in the photography world.  An example of the NPAA Is when we got the "what would you do" photo's and we had to argue whether or not some would be ethical.

Topic 2:  Mitch's first week photo of Christine Johnson over by the water was glorious and a great start!  Still a favorite of mine, Mitch.  It has great, contrasting powerful colors, and the angle and frame is capturing.

Paige I adore your picture of Nayeli and her dental model.  The depth of field in that picture is perfection, really looks professional.  I would try and sell this picture for the dental program because the color, the depth of field, the frame and how much you allow it to capture, and the angle are all glorious.  Spot on job Paige.

Photographer of the Week: Adam Elmakias

Adam Elmakias is an 8 year veteran in the photography world.  Adam was born in Madison Wisconsin, so he is a fellow Wisconsinite like Rob here.  Adam is now established in Los Angeles, but most of the time he is on tour with bands for his work.  At heart Adam is a rocker, and his love for music has got him where he is now.  Currently Adam works for Rock Sound, AMP Magazine, and Alternative Press; all of which are magazines with a rock and metal niche.  Adam has got the pleasure to work with amazing bands like Bring Me The Horizon, Deftones, A Day To Remember, Devil Wears Prada, and Yellowcard.  Adam is actually good friends with the guys of A Day To Remember, and has shot them since 2007.  Adam has watched the group climb the ladder of success, and arguably has helped them up a few steps with his photos.
Adam claims his style is very crisp, balanced, saturated, and real.  What got Adam into photography was when he was in his high school yearbook class.  Adam would go to a lot of concerts, and took the initiative to grow a strong friendship with a few local promoters.  The promoters weren’t just business associates, but true friends to him, and would let him into shows he otherwise wouldn’t be able to get in.  Adam claims what got him started in his personal photography was the support of his school counselor, who got him his first camera after seeing his great shots for yearbook, and the local promoters.
Adam has shot several Warped Tour’s, and loves the unique experience of Warped.  The crazy people, all the different bands, the experience is one that cannot be mimicked.  A few shows Adam has shot in Oregon Recently was Warped Tour 2014, House Party, the Right Back At It Again Tour, and the American Dream Tour.  House Party was headlined by A Day To Remember and featured Pierce The Veil and All Time Low.  Right Back At It Again was a tour based on A Day To Remember’s new album, Common Courtesy, and featured Of Mice & Men and Issues.  American Dream Tour was headlined by Bring Me The Horizon and was accompanied by Of Mice & Men.  All of these shows were in Portland, and I have had the pleasure of seeing Adam shoot these gigs.  With this information, its pretty obvious Adam has a list of favorite bands to shoot.
Outside of concert shots, Adam has also worked with clothing lines like Macbeth and Glamour Kills.  Though he has taken a step out of rock shows, his heart still lies in the back of a mosh pit.  Personally I love the energy in Adam’s photos.  His photos leak out the raw emotion of individuals who are pouring out their heart and soul on stage, and even though there is no sound to be heard, Adam beats the impossible and makes us see the music, not hear it.

Week 2 Forum

Topic 1:  Watching the calendar is always helpful, planning is always important in any profession.  Explore a new neighborhood is great because after taking so many pictures in the same places it becomes stale, it is called NEWS for a reason.
I would like to just explore new areas and take photos of new people to give people an idea of what it is like in a different environment from the ones we are used to.

Topic 2:  This photo is of Jay Larkins in Corvallis and his, "yoga family."  I love this photo because he is so into what he does.  He is determined, and nearly makes it look easy to do this, which I would assume is very difficult to use your fingers to lift your entire body parallel.  He took an alternative angle, gave strong light, and blurred the distance.  Two Questions:   How far have you went [the struggles] just to get a shot.  Secondly, I would ask him how he went from being in college to getting in the work force.

Week 1 Forum:

Goals:  My 3 goals are to get a great sports shot, to ace at least one exam, and to sneak a picture of one of the people in my class.

Photographer of the week:  Graham Fielder actually took pictures for a worldwide music festival, Warped Tour, the entire tour, which spans around 5 months!  Graham Fielder only has a high school diploma, but is reknown for his band photos. Graham also does videos and interviews.

Graham Fielder's Claim to Fame is definitely his shots of 21 Pilots, though they are not as popular of a band they have grown recognition distinctly from Fielder's photos.

LBCC Photos:  Pictures of the Commuter Staff:  Meeting Friday 12:00 in the Commuter office.  Rise of potential LBCC debate team:  Run by Mark Urista, has been an idea since Spring 2014, reaching out for new members.

Overall, medium, close up.
